That's a big part of what has made KDE 4 so successful after it became stable- it's just incredibly mature and modern, from the technology to the themes to the engines to the customization models- it's all a very coherent and robust experience. Then they proceeded to optimize it.
While I don't think Gnome has to be remade from scratch, I think some things they've been planning to get rid of for a while should be scrapped, they should rewrite the bits that aren't working well, and add the subtle polish to bring it up to speed. Gnome is still comparable to Windows as a development platform and desktop environment- we need to blow past them, like KDE and Qt have done. Then people can't point to Linux and say it doesn't look and feel and code AWESOME. Then people will realize just how valuable open source software is.
Lol, sorry, had some software discussions over Thanksgiving dinner, so I'm a bit livid at the moment, lol.
